Neakasa M1 Review

The M1 solves the single biggest failure mode of automatic litter boxes: cats that refuse to enter an enclosed globe.

Updated 2026-09-02

Verdict

The M1 solves the single biggest failure mode of automatic litter boxes: cats that refuse to enter an enclosed globe. The open top means most cats accept it in days rather than weeks, the 5.9 in entry is the lowest here, and it comes apart for cleaning faster than anything else in this index. The cost is odor — an open box cannot contain smell between cycles the way a sealed globe can.

Pros

  • Open top — the highest cat acceptance rate of any design here
  • Lowest entry height in this index at 5.9 in
  • Easiest full teardown for deep cleaning
  • Two-year warranty
  • Accepts almost any litter, including crystal

Cons

  • Open design limits odor containment between cycles
  • App is the plainest of the smart boxes
  • Wide footprint

Best for

  • Cats that refuse enclosed boxes
  • Kittens and senior cats
  • People who deep-clean often

Not ideal for

  • Rooms where odor containment is the top priority
  • Homes wanting a small footprint

Scores

Six categories, weighted toward the two that people actually buy these for. See the method.

  • Cleaning 8.5

How completely and reliably it clears waste on every cycle.

  • Odor control 7.6

Seal quality, filtration, and how the room smells after a week.

  • Safety 9.0

Sensor coverage, pinch protection, and behaviour when a cat re-enters.

  • App 7.9

Setup, connection reliability, and whether the data is actually useful.

  • Maintenance 9.1

How long a full clean takes and how well the unit comes apart.

  • Value 8.4

Purchase price plus consumables against what it delivers.

Cleaning

Very good, and it accepts almost any litter including crystal, which nothing else here does. The rotating base clears clumps cleanly and the shallow drawer is easy to check at a glance.

Odor control

The weak point, and the honest cost of the open-top design. The drawer itself seals well, but nothing contains smell from the litter bed between cycles. In a ventilated room this is a non-issue; in a studio apartment it is the reason to buy something else.

Safety

Infrared entry, a weight sensor and anti-pinch reverse, and the open top means a cat is never enclosed. That combination is why it scores 9.0 despite having one fewer sensor than the Litter-Robot 4.

Noise

Around 42 dB at three feet, the quietest powered box in this index. The open design means no resonating bonnet.

Setup

The easiest setup here at around ten minutes, because there is no bonnet to align and no drum to seat. Wi-Fi pairing is straightforward. It needs more floor width than a globe box, so measure first.

App

Plain but reliable. Cycle scheduling, a fill indicator and basic weight logging. No health trends, no per-cat identification. It does what it says and nothing more.

Consumables

Standard kitchen bags and a filter, around $70 a year — the lowest running cost of any smart box here.

Long-term cost

Mid-priced to buy and the cheapest smart box to run. Over five years it lands well below the Litter-Robot 4 and close to the CATLINK Scooper Pro X.
